3 things you can do to prepare your child for online learning

Once you have decided on a tutor, there are three ways that you prepare your child for online learning.

1. The right equipment

Your child will need the following equipment

  • pen/pencil and an exercise book
  • compass set (that has a protractor, 15cm ruler, compass, pencil, ruler, sharpener, and rubber)
  • scientific calculator
  • A computer/laptop with a camera and built in microphone

The following are optional equipment, but very useful:

  • headphone
  • touch pad with a pen (which makes it easier to write on the screen)
  • a desk and chair, your child should be sat at a table or desk and not on the bed

Please note: I will be earning from qualifying purchases. However, this will not cost you any extra. And, these are equipments I use myself.

2. Attendance and Punctuality

Make sure your child is ready at least 5 minutes before their tutoring session. Your child’s tutor will send you the details to join the online tutoring session. Tutors usually have a full schedule and have sessions back to back. If your child is late and miss part of their allocated time, the tutor might not be able to compensate this time.

If your internet connectivity is slow, please ask other family members to not use or turn off devices using Wifi for the duration of your child’s tutoring session. It works if your child closes down all other programs during the lesson.

Some tutors do not offer refund if your child cancels, especially if you cancel within 24 hours of their lesson. Clarify with your tutor what their absence, cancellation and/or change procedure is. Get their contact details too.

3. Use the time wisely

I am a teacher of mathematics at a local school. When one of my students tells me that they have a tutor, I send them a detailed report of their last assessment and a list of topics the child found challenging. The child then has the option to forward it to their tutor. Most of the time it is the parent who contacts me for this report.

Email your child’s mathematics teacher and ask them if they can help. They will know more about your child’s strengths and weaknesses, which means the tutor can work effectively by focusing on the topics the child is struggling with.

I hope these were helpful tips to prepare your child for online learning. If you would like more information then please go to the blog section of the website. If you are looking of getting a tutor but need some advice then this might help.
